Air is what makes campfires burn. Solid wood is first transferred into the gas phase. There, it reacts with the oxygen from the air and forms carbon dioxide and water plus a lot of heat. It works the same way in industrial incineration plants where toxic wastewater is burnt.
How we use air
We don't go through all the hassle of first heating the wastewater to 1'200 C and than burn it in the gas phase. We burn it directly in the aqueous phase. The process is called wet oxidation.
Artists spray paint to create beutiful airbrush pictures. Home gardeners spray herbicide on there lawn to keep it free from weeds. Industrial plants spray milk into dryers in order to get milk powder. And maybe you spray sun screen on your skin to protect yourself from to much sun at the beach.
How we spray
We use exactly this technology in a very sophisticated process in order to be able to oxidize organic ingrediants in industral wastewater.
Catalysis is the process of increasing the rate of a chemical reaction by adding a substance known as a catalyst, which is not consumed in the catalyzed reaction and can continue to act repeatedly. Because of this, only very small amounts of catalyst are required to alter the reaction rate in principle. A catalyst is used for example to convert the verytoxic carbon dioxide the the exhaust fumes of your car into carbon dioxide.
How we use catalysts
We have found catalysts that allow us to oxidize organic ingrerdiants in waste water at very low temperature already.
